B'nai Chai -- Ushering Guidelines

Ushering Sign up sheet

The responsibilities of an usher are really very simple. There are a few guidelines and the rest is common sense.

1. Ushers should be at the Temple thirty minutes prior to Services to (a) insert the worship supplements into the prayer books, (b) be available to distribute the prayer books and (c) greet congregants as they arrive.

2. The doors should be continuously monitored during the Service from inside the Sanctuary to ensure that the doors are closed quietly and that proper worship decorum is maintained in a calm, courteous and dignified manner. Someone should remain outside, however, for 10 minutes after services begin to assist late comers.

3.When the Rabbi emerges from his study to the Bema at the start of service, the doors of the Sanctuary should be closed. No one should be admitted while the Ark doors are open and the congregation is standing or during the Rabbi's sermon.

4. If a child cries and becomes disruptive, the ushers should politely ask the parents to take the child to the baby sitting room. If there is a problem the usher should speak to the administrator.

5. At the conclusion of the service, ushers should be in the lobby to collect and stack prayer books.

The usher is an important part of maintaining decorum in our services and we appreciate your help.
