The Special Few

Some people are bright:
Brilliant examples of humanity,
Warm, sincere, caring,
Tender to the touch.

Some people feel with passion:
Passionate models of being,
Fiery, fervent, fierce,
Enflamed by so much, or so little.

Some people know honor:
Honorable paradigms of right:
Just, fair, impartial,
There really are few, of such
People as you.

To Winter

The grayness of winter takes hold on the land,
Darkness at dusk, at dawn, at midday.
Vibrant blue and golden sun
Lost behind the unrelenting mist.

What's happened to cheer?
What's happened to delight?
What's happened to gaiety?
All enclosed in winter's rank gloom.

We fight! We wail at the implacable dullness.
We dance, we sing, we kindle lamps.
We celebrate miracles and joyous new birth:
The oil, The Christ, The New Year.
To no avail.
The gloom of winter invades our festivals.
The darkness of our earth reigns.

Approval Seeking

Unable to talk
Unable to question
Unable to respond -- fearful.
Each movement re-thought,
Re-planned, re-previewed,
Such discomfort.
Such numbness
The circuits cease to function.
The blinding lights and smooth passages,
Endlessly blocked, with gray wax halted.

Demons sit between the gaps
Throwing blocks.
Safety is missing, comfort, belonging.
And where the road back is ended,
Stalemate lives.
Unease...strain...overburdened.
Seemingly endless, faith itself slips away.

Watches

On the left wrist
Shining bright and new,
Rests this lovely watch.
Hands go round, as they pass.
But not my watch.

My watch stops!
Constantly, continually, coyly!
Cheap or dear,
Trim or gross,
The sands of time for me don't shift.
Now what do I make of that?

Now is here,
Forever, always meaningful.
Before, well, that's over.
Later, well, that never comes.
So now is the time,
Whatever it may be,
On the still, quiet watch round my wrist.

Call Me Back

Really needed you tonight.
Got out your number quick.
Dialed it fast.
Twice it rang and then there you were.
"Glad you called. Leave your name
      and number
When you hear the tone."

Hung up oh so slow.
Didn't hear the tone.
Really need you
'Cause I'm so alone.
Didn't need your tape.
Wouldn't do at all.
My name is Hope.
I can be reached in Heaven...
