Exercise 11 related to Lessons 7A and 7B -- Evaluating Web sites

  1. Go to this Web site from the University of California at Berkely. http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/EvalQuestions.html
  2. Print out the section of the Web page titled What to Look for: Checklist and Tricks for Evaluating Web pages.
  3. Use this checklist to help you evaluate the credibility of these two sites to determine which site probably gives more reliable information.

  4. Write a paragraph telling why one site is more reliable than the other. Your paragraph should reflect some of the items in the Berkley checklist and what you learned in Lesson 7.

Exercise 12 related to Lessons 7A and 7B -- Evaluating Web sites

Considering what you have learned about evaluating Web sites in Lessons 7A and 7B, write a hundred to two hundred words evaluating the credibility of the following site. Be specific in making your comments reflect information in Lessons 7A and 7B. Please keep in mind that sometimes a site is just meant to entertain rather than inform.

Exercise 13 related to Lessons 7A and 7B -- Evaluating Web sites

  1. Take a look at this migraine headache Web site, noting especially the doctor's name.

  2. Opening another browser window, go to the following American Medical Association's web site where you can check out a physician's credentials: http://www.ama-assn.org/aps/amahg.htm
  3. Using the AMA site, look up the doctor who gave the information on migraines.
  4. Answer these questions:
    a. What is his name?
    b. Located in what city and state?
    c. Is he an AMA member?
    d. Graduated from what medical school?
    e. Primary specialty?
    f. Major professional activity?
    g. Where was residency training done?

Explain why you think this site might be very helpful to you in evaluating medical information on the Internet.

  1. Using the two-window technique described in Lesson 8A, view this article on Internet Tips and Tricks.http://www.cnet.com/internet/0-3774-8-2832644-1.html. (Information is also on this site on how to get and install Internet Explorer 5.5.)
  2. In your Word document window, make notes on Explorer tips that you think will be especially helpful to you. Your notes should take up at least a full screen of space in your Word document window. Be sure that you have both your name and the site's URL in your document window. Save it and then print your notes to give to your instructor.
