Emile Najm not only poet -- also inventor
After Emile had been blind for several years, he invented and
patented a cane accessory that can be attached to the end of a
mobility cane. Emile calls his accessory "The Najm Cane Tip."
The Najm cane tip makes the cane easier and more comfortable to
use.
The cost of the Emile's cane tip is $20 which includes all shipping
and mailing charges to anywhere in the continental United States.
To inquire about purchasing the tip, send an email message to
Emile similar to the one linked here.
Be sure to make your subject "cane tip."
The following description and diagram are taken from a booklet
about Emile's patented invention. You may also view two
photos of the cane tip. For anyone tempted to try to duplicate
Emile's cane tip, please keep in mind that "Emile
Najm owns the patent for this cane-tip device. Anyone violating
this patent will be subject to legal action."
From Emile's booklet
During
the normal mobility cane scanning procedure, a tendency exists
for the cane to become caught in surface irregularities—grooves
as well as projections. The resulting sudden blocking of the cane
jars the user, causes excessive tiring of the wrist and presents
a potential for injury by impacting the handle of the cane.
Cushions shocks and improves scanning
The "Najm Cane Tip" cushions these shocks and improves
scanning; this reduces tiring of the wrist, lessens the chance
of injury, and allows a more confident and faster walk.
This smoothness of scanning is achieved by combining the impact
cushioning of a compression spring with the impact frequency reduction
of a large rounded tip. The result is a gliding action as the
spring permits the rounded tip to skip over troublesome obstructions.
Highlights and advantages
The "Najm Cane Tip" was invented, patented and is being
distributed by a blind engineer -- Emile G. Najm.
The main features:
- The spring provides impact cushioning and smoother scanning.
- The large rounded tip reduces the incidence of the sudden
cane blockage.
- The spring compresses over one inch to provide adequate reaction
time when the cane is blocked.
- Tactile feedback from the surface texture is enhanced by the
"Najm Cane Tip."
- The large round tip rotates freely to provide rolling action
as well as uniform wear. It is also replaceable.
- The "Najm Cane Tip" has a light-reflecting surface
for safety in the dark.
- The "Najm Cane Tip" fits standard half inch canes;
installation does not require any tools.
NOTE: The "Najm Cane Tip" eliminates most of the problems
which are encountered during use of mobility canes, problems which
are especially frustrating to the newly blinded as they learn
their proper use.

cane tip and you can inquire about ordering the cane tip by
sending a message to Emile being sure to use as your subject "cane
tip". |
