Legislation News

As your Legislative Chair of TRIF-CUT, I check out NYSUT and AFT websites to find what items may be of special interest to you. I then sum up what I find and provide you a link that will take you to the source where you can, if you wish, read the full story.

At today's TRIF-CUT lucheon, I reported that Florida Senator Mel Martinez sent me an email message referring to sources that suggest how we can support our troops especially during this holiday season. Here are the sources.

  1. Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society www.nmcrs.org
  2. Army Emergency Relief www.aerhq.org
  3. Air Force Aid Society www.afas.org
  4. Coast Guard Mutual Relief www.cgmahq.org

  1. AFT Legislation Action page provides links to Current AFT Legislative Action Campaigns. Clicking on the small pictures before each Action Campaign, you will go to webpages providing sample letters you can send to your political representatives. AFT also has a special page for retirees.
  2. AFT members write their reactions to Presidential candidates after hearing them speak at local rallies, town meetings, and other presentation formats
  3. American Federation of Teachers' retiree director Frank Stella outlined the AFT's legislative agenda at a Union sponsored breakfast in April 2007.
  4. Florida Governor Charlie Crist's website. To contact the Governor.
  5. League of Women Voters makes it easy to identify and contact your State and Federal representatives. If you are in the Palm Harbor zip code 34684-2901, here's the spot to go. And here is a webpage that will allow you to send a single message to President George W. Bush, Senators Martinez and Nelson, and Representative Gus Bilirakis. Another great resource from the League of Women Voters is the League's study on the illegal immigration issue.
  6. New York Representatives. Contact your NY representatives to increase the maximum calculation on which to figure annual COLA's. See web site for sample letter.
  7. NYSUT website suggests issues that we as Union members should take action on. See the bottom right hand corner of this NYSUT page that will provide you will sample letters to help in contacting your political representatives.
  8. Sample letter. This web site tells shows a sample letter to sent to your legislator about raising the amount on which to calculate the annual COLA. Please consider sending an e-mail to Albany.
  9. Several bills before NY legislature. This site lists several bills before the NY legislature of interest to retired teachers that you may consider writing to Albany about. It also includes sample letters you may forward after signing. Some of the issues regard COLA's, maintaining retiree health benefits and insurance options.
  10. Congress.org provides you with information on how your Federal and State representatives voted on various issues. You can sign up for (a) an email newsletter informing you weekly of new legislation being considered (b) and for an email message on how your representatives voted. Through this site, I was able to find how to send one email message expressing my views to all my representatives at once. Just insert your own zip code.

Hope this information will prove beneficial to you. Fern Gordon, Legislative Chair, TRIF-CUT.
