Co-presidents' message updated March 16, 2008

Nancy and Charles K.

Our Perspective

Have four years slipped away since we accepted the opportunity to guide the truly wonderful group of NYSUT retirees that have chosen the Tampa Bay area as the retirement mecca for the golden years? We have been grateful for the opportunity to meet and greet many colleagues from all sectors of New York who have accepted the monthly opportunity to gather and share a few memories while building new friendships.

Our Unit's project -- so gratifying

Reflecting upon the opportunity our Clearwater Unit has provided under the guidance of NYSUT and the Florida State Council 43, we must acknowledge that the current Unit project involving support of the young men within the Sheriff's Youth Ranch Egan Cottage facility has been the most gratifying experience over these years. From the moment our colleague presented the idea of helping the ten teenagers within the cottage through the wonderful response of our membership, we knew that even in retirement, once a teacher, always a teacher.

Turning over the reins of leadership

Having completed the March election process to provide leadership for the next two years, it is with sincere pleasure that we prepare to turn over the reins of leadership to the elected slate featuring a man who has been an officer of Council 43 while also holding various offices within our Unit. A recipient of the NYSUT Community Service Award within the State of Florida, Phil has provided his assistance wherever and whenever asked. Following the April 10th picnic, his team will commence plans for the 2008-2009 season beginning in September.

With our last opportunity to recognize another colleague who has served our Unit for more than a decade in various leadership roles while also serving the entire community in his chosen field of music, we have have nominated Chuck, our retiring vice president for consideration of the Community Service Award to be presented this spring.

We would be totally remiss if we did not admit our mixed feelings as we prepare to hand over the gavel at the conclusion of our traditional April picnic that allows all of us to simply relax, share conversation, and enjoy a grand buffet before taking Clearwater's summer hiatus. And yes, we will be back with our friends in the coming years, with even more time to enjoy the friends we have found.
