Application addendum: Why should this website win the first place award as an outstanding Website in the 2007 NYSUT Retiree Journalism Competition

by Richard E. Gordon (webmaster)

Last updated August 2, 2007

Won NYSUT contest twice

We have won awards for this Website from NYSUT two years in a row -- in 2005 and 2006. We have continued the outstanding quality shown these past years, but we have this year even made improvements making us even more deserving of a first place award for an outstanding NYSUT retiree website.

If fortunate to win again, suggestions for how certificates should be made out

Winning website

If we win first place again for the outstanding website, please be sure the certificate reflects that Richard E. Gordon is the Webmaster and the chapter is TRIF -- Clearwater Unit.

Winning feature article on Pat Lacourse

If we win first place again for the outstanding feature article, please show that Richard Gordon is the author, the subject of the article in Pat Lacourse, and the retiree chapter is TRIF-Clearwater Unit.

Reasons for winning the award a third time --

  1. Our outstanding Spotlight articles in which we give a place of honor to those members who have done something special, something outstanding for our Unit.
  2. This year on our Home page we have included statements clearly stating the mission or purpose of our Unit.
  3. Our project page tells of our continued efforts in helping youngsters in our community.
  4. New this year is a password protected folder www.gordonrichard.com/privatecut . This private or protected folder contains
    (a) our membership chart which makes it easy to compare the number of our paid memberships for the last eleven years -- since 1995; (2) an article by one of our members giving the early history of our Unit. This password protected article includes the full names -- first and last -- of the persons involved while the unprotected article, for privacy purposes, only gives first name and first initial of the last name; (3) this very page that you are now reading.
  5. Our President's page continues to be outstanding, re-written each month for a new, refreshing change of perspective.
  6. Our current Calendar page continues to promote our activities, but even gives a link to a Calendar of events in our archives. This archives-calendar page shows events that have already passed and been deleted from our current calendar page. Someone viewing our site late in the year, say for example in April when almost all our activities have been held and been deleted from the regular Calendar page, can check our Calendar in our archives to see the kinds of events we sponsor during the year.
  7. Our Contents page shows the depth and breath of our website, with far more content I suspect than any other NYSUT retiree chapter or unit website. Keep in mind, too, that our website is not part of a parent website -- such as a website created by active teachers. We have created our own, independent website perhaps showing the way for other retiree chapters in Florida as well as New York State. This content page provides all the links necessary to get to every page in the site.
  8. Our website reflects solid support for NYSUT's, AFT's, and AFL-CIO's views on issues and endorsements of candidates during this past election. On our Home page we provided links to where are members could easily find our Unions' views.
  9. Our site continues to be well-written, well organized, attractive, easy to read, and easy to navigate. The graphics, including original photos such as those on our Spotlight pages, add color and life to our pages.
  10. This site is so popular that when on March 16. 2006 I did a Yahoo search on retired teachers Florida, this site came up number 1 out of 1,740,000 hits.
